The whole reason I went to nutrition school in 2017 was to find a way to support my son who was newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Going to school while working full time and caring for a chronically ill son was TOUGH.
I went because I could not find any local alternative health practitioners to support my way of thinking. I was not satisfied with the nutrition guidance given by the hospital dieticians, on how to support our very young infant, who was diagnosed at just 10months old.
So after hundreds of hours of research, many arguments with our dietician, and a flight to Arizona to see Dr. Mona Goldstein, I decided to take matters into my own hands.
My hope is that I can provide some support to other parents of newly diagnosed, or struggling Type 1 diabetics that want to get control of their blood sugars. We know that if we do not get their blood sugars in control they face a whole slew of health issues in the future!
I am proud to say that my perseverance has paid off. In the middle of school, when I was honestly not sure if I could make it through the workload of the course and my intense full-time job in advertising all the while caring for a young T1D. I was ready to give up. Why was I putting myself through all of this? I had not slept in three or four years.
Then, I received the most amazing call from my partner, who had just come from our three month check in with the endocrinologist. Sadly, I was unable to go to the appointment because of work and was feeling down and felt like giving up. When he called he immediately told me his HBA1C – 6.0 – okay, wish we were in the 5’s but okay. Then the news.
At this point we had been living with T1D for 4 years and our amazing Dr, who was always very receptive to my approach to our son’s care – we are mostly grain-free and low carb high fat (LCHF) and no milk. At the hospital, our dietician fought us the entire time and so we just stopped seeing her. Luckily, our Dr. was always wiling to listen and even read a study I found about LCHF in young children with epilepsy.
Well this day, of course when I was not there, our Dr. said that because of the work that we were doing, and of course the success we were having, they were starting to rethink their approach to Type 1 diabetes. That they were considering looking at what food plan they were recommending for children. Spurred on by this amazing news, I finished school and now I want to help others find what works for them and their children.
I want to help all those affected, sharing my knowledge and providing support wherever possible. Especially those who may not be able to afford the services of alternative health practitioners (if that is you, reach out let’s work out a plan).
